明清之际的儒耶对话与中国哲学创新

  谢和耐在《中国与基督教——中西文化的首次撞击》一书中认为,由于汉语中系词“是”的缺失,导致中国人不懂逻辑,不懂本质与现象、灵魂与肉体、自立者与依赖者的区分,所以在传教士与中国士人之间不可能有真正意义上的对话。文章以汉语研究和中国哲学研究的成果证明其观点不能成立。明清之际儒耶哲学对话的大量史料证明,通过对话而实现相互理解、促进哲学的发展不仅可能,而且是客观存在的事实;以世界哲学的眼光来观照中西哲学,把它看作是体现人类对真善美的理想追求的共同精神财富,促进对话和相互理解、相互补益,是把中西哲学研究都提升到新境界的必然途径。
英文摘要:
  In his monograph China and the Christian Impact, Jacques Gernet argued that because of the absence of the linking verb “be” in the Chinese language, the Chinese knew neither logic nor the distinction between substance and phenomena, soul and body, and dependent and independent; therefore there could not be genuine dialogue between missionaries and the Chinese scholar gentry. This article rebuts this view with research on the Chinese language and Chinese philosophy. Rich historical evidence of the ConfucianChristian dialogue at the turn of the Ming and Qing dynasties prove that it is not only possible but an objective fact that the two sides were able to come to a mutual understanding and to realize the development of philosophy via dialogue. It is necessary to elevate Chinese and Western philosophical studies to a new realm by regarding them from the perspective of a world philosophy, as the shared spiritual wealth of humankind in the pursuit of the ideals of truth, goodness and beauty, and by facilitating their dialogue and mutual understanding and benefit.
